Quick overview

Steps at a glance

Estimated time: 45 min

  1. 1

    Check Fuel Mix and Freshness

Drain old fuel, use fresh mix at the ratio your manual specifies, or use canned premix for small tanks.

  2. 2

    Spark and Air Filter

Confirm spark at the plug with a spark tester or by laying the plug on the metal part of the engine. If plug looks bad replace with saame part number. Then replace foam air filters that crumbled over storage.

  3. 3

    Carb Path

If it will not fire on fresh mix, carb cleaning is next — same principles as my [carburetor cleaning guide](/blog/carburetor-cleaning-guide). Basically, you may need to drain old fuel out and look really closely for any varnish.

Trimmers sit all winter with fuel in the tank more often than mowers. Spring no-start on trimmers is usually stale gas or a gummed carb.

DIY Veteran Tips

I run my trimmer dry at season end or use stabilizer — same rule as every small engine.

Final Thoughts

Fresh fuel mix, clean air, and a clear carb fix most trimmer no-starts after storage.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Should I use premixed fuel in my trimmer?
Premixed canned fuel is convenient and stable for small tanks — good for occasional users who do not want mix math.
