Lawn Leveling Calculator
Estimate soil volume to fix low spots, ruts, and uneven grade before overseeding.
What goes into leveling blends
- Sand
Improves drainage and fills low spots without holding excess moisture against grass crowns.
- Topsoil or compost
Adds organic matter and gives seed something to root into after you rake the mix in.
- Peat moss
Lightens heavy mixes and holds moisture around seed — useful when leveling and overseeding together.
- Shallow passes
Keep each application under about 1/2 inch. Deeper layers in one go can bury and kill existing grass.

FAQ
How much soil do I need to level a lawn?
Multiply the area in square feet by depth in inches, divided by 12, to get cubic feet. This calculator also converts to cubic yards for bulk orders.
Can I level and overseed at the same time?
Yes — many homeowners topdress lightly, work it in with a leveling rake, then overseed. Keep depth modest so you do not smother existing grass.
